BBB - David Smitherman, with the Better Business Bureau, joined us this morning with a few tips on caring for your air conditioner! Take the time to check contractors out carefully; rushing to find a cooling contractor can burn a hole in your wallet instead of keeping you cool. Research the company's background and licensing and always confirm that the company is licensed and insured. Compare prices and service packages. Get at least three estimates for any air conditioning repair work or maintenance work. All bids should be in writing and should provide a full description of the services to be provided and the materials to be used. Review warranty coverage. Find out if the company offers any type of warranty or guarantee. Make certain you understand the terms and conditions of the coverage. Also, be sure to check the warranty on your current air conditioning unit to determine whether any repairs or replacements may be covered. Ask about energy efficiency. Look for the ENERGY STAR label to find out more about products that may cost a little more up front, but save you in energy costs over time. Some models may even be eligible for a tax credit. Ask your HVAC contractor (heating ventilation and air conditioning) to verify tax credit eligibility and provide the Manufacturer Certification Statement for the equipment you plan to purchase. BETH K - UAB nutritionist, Dr. Beth Kitchin, joined us this morning to talk about processed meats! Let's take a look at a few important things about this research: It did not show that eating processed meat directly increases the risk of heart disease, stroke or cancer. This study showed that eating processed meats may be related to heart disease, stroke, and early death in some way. However, these kinds of studies are limited in what we can really say about the results. The processed meat could have just been a marker for something else - such as genetics or something else that people who died were doing. The link to death was moderate to weak - processed meats may be involved - but they're probably not big players. And some news that got overlooked in this study was that other kinds of red meat was not related to an increased risk of mortality, cancer, heart disease or stroke. Dr. Beth Kitchin says we should enjoy processed meats in moderation, only one to two times a week.

COOKING - Clif Holt, from Little Savannah, joined us this morning in the kitchen to tell us about Swine and Wine which is this Sunday, March 17th from 5-8pm at Old Car Heaven. It features the South's most celebrated animal: swine! Now in its fifth year, this outstanding event draws chefs from some of Birmigham's finest restaurants and a few guest chefs from out of town. The idea is simple: the chefs get together to roast some pigs overnight, make some delicious side dishes, and serve a big family style meal. Oh yeah, and there's wine and beer... This year Birmingham's Avondale Brewing, Back Forty Beer Co., Cahaba Brewing Co and Birmingham Budweiser will be providing the beer and Grassroots Wines will be featuring wine from their newly released label "La Wine."
