HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Alabama's Attorney General fired back at a former UAH professor in prison for murder.
The state attorney general filed a response to Amy Bishop Anderson's appeal over the weekend. It's a 67 page court filing that argues she has no basis for her appeal.
It's filled with phrases such as "this claim fails." Another common word throughout the filing from Luther Strange's office is "meritless." That word showed up more than a dozen times as they argued that Bishop Anderson's guilty plea should stand.
Bishop Anderson pleaded guilty to capital murder and attempted murder. She challenged the voluntariness of her guilty plea.
The state attorney general argued she fully understood her plea agreement because she signed and initialed two different forms acknowledging she knew what she was doing by pleading guilty.
The attorney general's brief goes on to say, "indeed, because Anderson knowingly and voluntarily pleaded guilty and got precisely what she bargained for, this issue, even if it were properly before the court is meritless."
Now that all the briefs are filed, it will be up to the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to decide if this appeal will go forward. There is no timetable for a decision.
