Wreck at Hwy 280 and I-459 causes major gridlock

A traffic accident on Highway 280 at the I-459 interchange left drivers in gridlock Wednesday evening.

The accident occurred during the 5 p.m. rush hour and traffic backed up to Red Mountain Expressway in the eastbound lanes and all the way to Highway 119 in the westbound lanes.

Two cars collided and one was pushed onto the edge of the I-459 overpass. At the same time, there was a power outage in the Cahaba Heights area, which caused additional issues.

Authorities say there were minor injuries in the wreck.
