Thursday is the last day to see a movie at the Carmike Cinemas at Eastdale Mall. The company is closing its facility, which includes 8 theaters, and is planning to move to a different location.
Officials with Carmike say they're choosing to leave their present location as its lease expires. Carmike's Director of Marketing, Terrell Mayton, said the company has a huge commitment to Alabama and isn't leaving Montgomery.
A new, currently unnamed Carmike theater will open on Chantilly Parkway, though there is no timetable for a groundbreaking. Mayton said it generally takes about 10 months to complete a project.
On January 23, 2013, the Georgia-based movie theater company announced that it had signed an agreement to bring a 13-screen digital cinema complex to Chantilly Parkway (Route 110) next to the Home Depot. During that announcement, company officials said they expected the project to be complete by the first half of 2014.
The new theater will boast luxurious stadium seating for 2,800 people and will showcase what is being dubbed as the "BIGD" large format auditorium. That auditorium will have a wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling 81-foot wide screen that can be seen by 600 people during a showing. The other 12 auditoriums will be equipped with large, wall-to-wall screens, as well as high-quality DLP DIGITAL projection and surround sound.
Eastdale Mall confirmed that Carmike was operating on a month-to-month lease, but said it was not given an official last day of operations by Carmike.
"Carmike has been a great retailer for us for many years. We have a good relationship. It is unfortunate to see them leave," said Eastdale Mall spokesman Dave Scholoss. "We are working really hard every day to find a family friendly entertainment style retailer to fill that space."
The last movie to play at the Eastdale Mall location will be "Snitch".
