TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Tuscaloosa authorities have arrested a man they say ran over a Brookwood police officer with an ATV.

Austin Shields turned himself into the Tuscaloosa County Jail Thursday morning after being released from the hospital. Shields is charged with attempted murder for running over a police officer when the officer tried to stop him and two others who were riding ATVs.

Police were called out to the Brookwood Park area earlier this month after residents reported people on ATVs were driving through and tearing up their yards. The officer pursued the suspects for two miles until the ATVs turned around on a gravel road. When the officer got out of the car to order the suspects to stop, one ATV driver hit the gas and ran the officer over.

Police said the officer's leg was broken in the incident.

"One of the [ATVs] ran over my officer, up his body, up to his chest with the tire causing injury to his right leg. As the vehicle was doing this, the officer fired two shots through the bottom of the vehicle and struck the subject," Brookwood Police Chief Randy Kizziah said.

Shields was treated for his injuries at DCH and turned himself in today after being released. He is now free on bond, according to Captain Loyd Baker.

There is no update on the injured officer's condition.
