Rescue personnel responded to the Columbiana area on Thursday, March 14 after getting a report of a one-year-old child who had suffered chemical burns to the body.
The child was in critical condition and taken to the hospital by a Lifesaver helicopter. Investigators say the child had been burned by a suspected drain cleaner from being exposed to a possible methamphetamine laboratory. The one-year-old is expected to recover from those injuries.
Investigators found evidence at the location where the incident occurred indicating that meth was being made there. They arrested two people they say were responsible for manufacturing methamphetamine.
Shelby County officials charged Roger Wayne English, a 56-year-old from Wilsonville, and Brandy Michele Shawyer, a 26-year-old from Shelby for drug-related crimes.
English is charged with first degree assault, chemical endangerment of a child, unlawful possession of manufacturing paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful manufacturing of a controlled substance. His bond is set at $225,000.
Shawyer is facing charges of first degree assault, chemical endangerment of a child, unlawful possession of manufacturing paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful manufacturing of a controlled substance. Her bond is $235,000.
