BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A teenager shot Sunday night at Railroad Park has died from his injuries, the Jefferson County coroner's office confirms.

Birmingham police identified the victim as Jarmaine Walton, a 15-year-old from Birmingham. Walton was found suffering from a gunshot wound in the park near 14th Street South around 7:30 p.m. His body was found near the jungle gym in the middle of the park, Sgt. Johnny Williams confirmed.

Walton was transported to UAB in critical condition Sunday night and pronounced dead at the hospital at 4:45 a.m. Monday, March 18.

Police say this is the first shooting that has happened inside the park, which opened to the public in September 2010.

So far no arrests have been made in the case. Birmingham police are asking the public to come forward with any information that could be helpful for solving the case.

"This is an active investigation where we're calling on the public to give us the information we need," Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper stated in a release.

"I understand that many people are focusing on the location but let's not forget the victim. We've had hundreds of thousands of people to visit and enjoy the park but it only takes one troublemaker to ruin it for others," Roper said.

Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to contact the B.P.D. Homicide Unit at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
