PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla., March 18, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The storied golf courses at BallenIsles Country Club, where many golf legends like Arnold Palmer originally qualified for the PGA Tour, have a new title – host to a one-day charity golf tournament that raised a record $104,830.

BallenIsles Men's Golf Association's hosted the unique fundraising and awareness campaign on Wednesday, March 6 that included a silent auction and the Prostate Cancer Golf Tournament in support of accelerating Prostate Cancer Research.
"This was a significant increase over the fundraising milestones we reached last year and we're pleased that one hundred percent of the money raised by this tournament and silent auction goes directly to a post-doctoral training fellowship at Scripps Florida, aimed at developing better treatments and, ultimately a cure for this disease that strikes 1 out of 6 American men," said BallenIsles MGA/Prostate Cancer Committee Chair Burt Rein.
Professor John Cleveland, Chairman of the Department of Cancer Biology at Scripps Florida, lauded the efforts of the BallenIsles community. "We are immensely thankful for the very generous support and efforts of the Men's Golf Association and their tireless work to provide Scripps Florida with much needed resources to accelerate scientific discoveries and to save lives. In today's fiscal environment in particular, the importance of private philanthropy is magnified. The prostate cancer research project will be led by Associate Professor Kendall Nettles who joined Scripps Florida in 2005.
"In collaboration with Dr. John Katzenellenbogen, a renowned steroid receptor chemist at the University of Illinois, we have identified novel compounds that effectively inhibit steroid receptors. Studies indicate that these agents are effective against many human malignancies, including prostate cancer," Professor Nettles said.
Using the latest cutting-edge technologies, researchers at Scripps Florida focus on basic biomedical research and drug discovery.
Last year, BallenIsles donated a record $88,000 to the Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF). At the time it was the largest donation from a one-day Golf event in the history of "battles" for Arnie's Army, Arnold Palmer's unique fundraising golf challenge that benefits the PCF.
