Editorial: Education

The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, March 19.

You know, in some countries they pick and choose who they'll educate…based on a variety of criteria, including gender. Education is used as a competitive pawn by those governments.

In America, our goal is to educate everyone…at least from kindergarten through high school. It's one of our democratic principles that make us unique in the world. At least…that's the American hope…to produce an educated, innovative, competitive and thriving population.

Well…today, reality is…our American education system has become a political pawn, as well. We have schools in our country, in our state, in our communities that are failing. Some are closing because of underperformance or dwindling student populations…with flight to better school districts. Those who have the where with all to choose their children's schools have done just that. But what about those students left behind? It's as though we have turned our backs on hundreds of thousands of our children, who for whatever reason can't control where they go to school.

The result… we are reaping what we have sown. Our prisons are bulging with our youth…education-deprived high school dropouts. We have a large population of unemployed, unskilled folks who have been thrust into an ever-changing competitive world…a world that won't wait for us to figure this out. When will our children rather than our political agendas come first?

What do you think?
