What is a rock star drummer doing lecturing business students at Auburn University?
Kansas drummer and 1970's rock legend Phil Ehart was the guest speaker at Auburn's Business School Music Speaker Series. He spoke about lessons he has learned managing and playing in a successful band for the last four decades.
The room was packed with people from all over the community, not just students, to hear this rock legend speak.
Ehart is cofounder and manager of the band Kansas that has been popular for more than 40 years. He also spoke about the difficulties of managing a rock n' roll band in a competitive business like the music industry.
He says there is little difference between managing a rock 'n' roll band and managing a business; it's like any other business, but with better stories.
"I'm not really a purveyor of messages," Ehart said. "It's just telling a story and how you can have dreams at a early age and those dreams can come true if you work really hard,"
Despite serving as the band's manager for the past 25 years and having no formal degree, Ehart says he earned his business education at the "school of hard knocks."
On Friday, Kansas will begin a three-week tour in Massachusetts to celebrate its 40th year.
