BBB - The Better Business Bureau celebrated its Centennial year by ringing the closing bell of the New
York Stock Exchange, laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns in
Arlington Cemetery, and helping a record-breaking number of consumers
across the United States and Canada. The organization's popular Scam
Alerts, blog and social media sites attracted a new generation of BBB users. Two new microsites - BBB Smart Investing and BBB Scam Stopper generated a lot of interest, as did the group's annual list of Top Ten Scams. BBB maintains Business Reviews on more than 4.5 million businesses and rates them based on complaint
histories, responsiveness to customers, licensing, legal and government
action, and other factors. Nearly 400,000 are Accredited Businesses that
meet the BBB Code of Business Practices and are permitted to display the BBB logo in their marketing and place of business.
BETH K - UAB Nutritionist Dr. Beth Kitchin joined us to discuss calcium supplements and the risk of heart attacks. There've been lots of reports in the media lately about calcium supplements possibly increasing your risk of heart attacks, but calcium is also important for bone health - so what should you do? Here are some important points about the reports you are seeing:
- Some research shows that excess calcium supplementation could increase the risk of heart attacks but others do not show this!
- The studies that show an increased show that the increase is relatively small
- Calcium from natural food sources do not seem to be related to an increased risk of heart attack
- The problems seem to be link to excess calcium supplementation
- Iit's important to get the right amount but not too much
- Not everyone needs a calcium supplement - more is not better!
- Most people need 1000 mg to 1200 mg of calcium a day
Quick Assessment of Your Calcium Intake: Do you eat at least 3 to 4 servings of these foods at least 5 days a week? 1 cup of milk, soy milk, or almond milk (300 mg); 1 small carton of yogurt (200 mg); 1 slice of cheese (200 mg); & 1 cup of calcium added orange juice (300 mg). If you are eating a total of 3 to 4 servings of these foods most every day, you probably don't need a calcium supplement!!! If you are not eating any or just a few of these foods, you may need a calcium supplement or two to meet your needs. If you're going to take a Calcium Supplement, take Calcium Carbonate with food, take Calcium Citrate - with our without food, check serving size (a serving is not always one tablet), check your Multivitamin (a lot of women's multis have quite a bit of calcium in them - so you may not need an extra supplement), and take only what you need (more calcium is not better - try not to go too much over 1500 mg a day - total - that is from supplements and foods together!!!). To estimate your daily calcium score, visit www.uab.edu/toneyourbones - you will find our calcium counter there - put in your servings of the foods and it will calculate how much calcium you are getting from foods! Then you can decide if you need calcium supplements!
