BESSEMER, AL (WBRC) -

Need help filing your taxes before the April 15 deadline? At least 20 places in Jefferson County are offering free tax help, including one in Bessemer set for April 3.

Free tax help will be offered Wednesday, April 3 at the Bessemer Civic Center between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Dan Boone, a spokesman for the Internal Revenue Service, says no appointments are necessary and walk-ins are welcome at the one-day tax help site in Bessemer. The civic center is located at 1130 9th Avenue SW.

"There are about 20 other free tax help sites in Jefferson County operated by local organizations and staffed by IRS-trained and certified volunteers," Boone added.

"They offer free tax help to filers whose household income was below $51,000 in 2012 or who file a simple tax return. Some sites specialize in helping filers age 60 or older."

To find other tax help sites, call the IRS toll-free at 1-800-906-9887 or visit www.irs.gov and search for "Volunteer Tax Help."

You will need to bring the following items to have your tax return prepared for free at one of the help sites:

-Proof of identification – Picture ID

-Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents or a Social Security Number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter for you, your spouse and dependents

-Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return

-Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc from all employers

-Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)

-A copy of last year's federal and state returns, if available

-Proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers for Direct Deposit, such as a blank check

-Total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider's tax identifying number (the provider's Social Security Number or the provider's business Employer Identification Number) if appropriate

-To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms.
