BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham's Avondale neighborhood is getting national recognition after "Southern Living" magazine featured the area as a hip place to live and visit.

Avondale has many ingredients needed to make a revival: aging buildings that have taken on new life with new, young business people establishing their enterprises.

In the "Next Great Neighborhood" feature in their April issue, "Southern Living" highlights businesses like the Avondale Brewing Company, Fresfully and Saw's Soul Kitchen.

"It's terrific. "Southern Living" has such a widespread readership and that kind of attention really helps the local community and just brings in numerous amounts of people that come in and spend money and enjoy the area," Hunter Lake of Avondale Brewing Company said.

Lake says that kind of attention can only help the neighborhood's momentum.

"People come in all the time talking about different articles they've read and seen and how it was a few years ago and how much it's changed and how excited everybody is, even the local residents," Lake said.

That momentum has made it possible for the brewery to build an outdoor stage to book more music acts.
