JEH JEH LIVE - Today is National Walking Day and Americans are encouraged to lace up their sneakers and take at least 30 minutes out of their day to get up and walk. It's a great way to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity and to give your family, friends and co-workers a friendly push toward a healthier life. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of all Americans, however, it can be prevented in many cases Simple lifestyle changes, like getting regular exercise, can put a dent in your risk of developing heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of exercise, 5 days per week . Walking is a great way to exercise: It's free, it's easy and it has the lowest dropout rate of any other exercise. Here in Birmingham, National Walking Day kicks off the countdown to the Birmingham Heart Walk, which is taking place on Saturday, June 22 at Uptown Birmingham. This is the first year that the Walk is launching from Uptown Birmingham. The Birmingham Heart Walk is sponsored nationally by Subway and Jenny Craig. The local presenting sponsor is Baptist Health System. The event includes a 5K run and a 1 mile walk. The point of the Heart Walk campaign is to encourage people to make healthier lifestyle decisions, like getting more exercise, eating better and giving up smoking.
