Birmingham police are charging a 25-year-old man with the murder of his girlfriend's four-year-old son.
Police say the child, Jamarion Swinnie, died on Dec. 16, 2012 at Children's Hospital. Officers launched an investigation into his death after hospital staff told police officers about bruising on the boy's body.
Sgt. Johnny Williams with BPD says Birmingham Fire and Rescue workers transported Swinnie's body to the E.R. at Children's Hospital just prior to his death. The coroner's office later determined the cause of the child's death to be homicide as a result of his injuries.
"During the course of the
investigation, detectives discovered that the boyfriend of the victim's mother
was the person responsible for the injuries on the victim," Williams stated in a release.
Birmingham police arrested the boyfriend, Robert Lewis Martin of Birmingham, and charged him with capital murder.
Martin is incarcerated in the Jefferson County Jail.
