OUR HOUSE - Springtime means time to start thinking about maintaining and improving your yard.  Brian Harrison from Marvin's Building Materials and Home Centers joined us with advice on how to choose the proper power equipment. Electric trimmers are lighter and easier to use than gas trimmers and require no gas and oil, so no mess.  Electrics are less expensive but don't have as much cutting power as a gas trimmer. Trimmers either have curved or straight shafts.  Curved shafts are generally lightweight, well balanced, and economically priced. Straight shafts are good for larger yards and for reaching under decks, shrubs, benches, etc.  Straight shafts are also more also more comfortable for tall people to use.  Larger cutting widths are good for larger yards.  7"-12" is good for light use.  14"-15" for moderate use.  17" and larger are for heavy-duty use.  Trimmers with blades on them are called brushcutters.  These are good for cutting tall, heavy grass or light brush.  The blade attaches right to the trimmer.  Most of them also can be used with a string spool. The right lawnmower makes lawn maintenance a simple and enjoyable task. Make sure you choose a mower that is comfortable to use and a good fit for the size of your lawn. As you shop for your mower, consider the size of your yard and what you desire for grass disposal. Nothing works faster or more effectively than a professional pressure washer when it comes to heavy-duty outdoor cleaning projects. You can use a pressure washer to clean surfaces such as debris-ridden sidewalks and driveways. You can even use a pressure washer's powerful stream to strip peeling paint from a deck or house prior to resealing or painting.
