The following are comments to an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, April 2:
Why should we support things in downtown Birmingham when the black councilman and the mayor will not support Barber's Motor Speedway with the contribution they have agreed to pay but now all of a sudden they won't pay? I think what aught to happen is we quit supporting their facilities downtown.
I totally agree with you but, there is one area Birmingham needs to work on in order for the city to thrive and that is their roads.
They say "you build it, they'll come." They'll rob, they'll steal, they'll kill. And that's what's going happen. Birmingham's not going thrive, we're going to end up being another Chicago. I don't know what the problem is. Well, I do know what the problem is. Parents are not making their kids mind. They walk around with saggy britches. They say they want respect, they don't have any respect for themselves much less anybody else. They've grown up to think that everybody owes them something and that's just the way they feel. It's not going go away and it's going be trouble. And, every time you build something in Birmingham it's not too long there's a robbery next thing there's a murder and the same thing over and over and over and it's going to continue until these parents start making these kids mind and do what they're supposed to do.
Thank you for your interest in this week's editorial. We look forward to hearing more comments from you on future issues.
