Here is what you saw on Good Day Alabama for April 8, 2013:
BBB - David Smitherman with the Better Business Bureau joined us with a look at how to get the most from your auto insurance. Motor vehicle collisions and other auto-related mishaps result in billions of dollars in property damage, medical and legal bills and lost income every year. Car owners need to protect their vehicle and themselves with auto insurance, but how do you know if you are properly covered? It's not enough to simply have car insurance. Car owners should be aware of what their insurance covers…and what it doesn't. Better Business Bureau advises:
Understand the insurance coverage you are buying.
Know and monitor the condition of your vehicle.
Report damage to your insurance company as soon as possible.
Get to know your mechanic.
BBB rates tens of thousands of insurers, car dealers and auto repair facilities. Check out bbb.org before buying, insuring or repairing your vehicle.
BETH K - UAB Nutritionist Dr. Beth Kitchin joined us with the foods that can lower your blood pressure! Blood pressure is a big risk factor for stroke and heart disease. Here's how you can drop it using your diet:
1. Do Dairy: the DASH study showed that including 2 to 3 servings of dairy foods a day like milk and yogurt can lower blood pressure
2. Nuts and Seeds: DASH also showed that diets that included nuts and seeds three times a week helped lower blood pressure
3. Fruits and Vegetables: DASH also showed that diets that included 8 to 10 servings of fruits and vegetables a day lowered blood pressure
4. Sodium Potassium Switch: some research has shown that when you get twice as much potassium as sodium you may lower your blood pressure - most Americans do just the opposite - twice the amount of sodium compared to potassium
5. Lose Weight: if you're overweight, small amounts of weight loss often drops weight - you don't have to get skinny - sometimes just 10 pounds can lower blood pressure!
6. Exercise: even if it doesn't result in weight loss, exercise lowers blood pressure - getting out and walking most days of the week can do the trick!
