Investigators are looking into a house fire that killed a mother and son in Birmingham. The fire happened around 9 p.m. at a home near Avenue I and 17th Street.
Upon arriving at the scene, fire crews saw heavy fire and smoke from the rear of the house. They were able to retrieve a male from the home, but were not able to get to a female inside, due to the intensity of the blaze. Her body was later recovered.
Firefighters say the female was an 81-year-old disabled woman who died in the home. Her son was the male pulled from the home. Fire officials say he died at UAB Hospital.
Firefighters believe the fire may have been caused by food being left on the stove.
