A string of house fires that erupted Tuesday in east Birmingham area could be arson. Birmingham police are questioning two men in connection to the fires that affected five homes in the Woodlawn area.
The fires started around 11 a.m. Birmingham firefighters were almost finished putting out the first fire when they got a call about another fire around the corner on 52nd Place North and Georgia Road.
That fire spread to other nearby homes. In all, officials say five houses either burned or had water damage. The burned homes were vacant but a family of seven lived in one of the homes that had smoke damage. The Salvation Army is assisting that family.
Birmingham police say at least one firefighter was sent to the hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion.
