The IRS, along with its partners, are offering free tax preparation help on Saturday, April 13.
From the IRS - With the April 15 tax deadline not far away, the Internal Revenue Service today reminded tax filers in the Birmingham area that many local free tax help sites won't be open much longer Two sites will offer free tax preparation and e-filing Saturday, April 13.
A special one-day tax help site will be open Sat., April 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at ALAGASCO Midtown, Twenty 20th St., South, in Birmingham. Walk-in help will be offered with no appointment required. The site is sponsored by the Alabama Asset Building Coalition and its partners.
Free tax help will also be offered Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Smithfield Library, #1 8th Ave., West, in Birmingham. Appointments can be made by calling Impact Alabama at 1-888-99-TAX-AL, that's 1-888-998-2925.
The free tax help is provided by IRS-certified volunteers and is open to filers whose household income was below $51,000 in 2012 or who file a simple tax return.
To find other free help sites, including those open on weekdays, tax filers can call the IRS toll-free at 1-800-906-9887 or visit www.irs.gov and search for "Volunteer Tax Help." Some sites specialize in helping filers who are age 60 or older.
To have your tax return prepared at one of these sites, bring the following information with you:
Proof of identification – Picture ID
Social Security Cards for you, your spouse and dependents or a Social Security Number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter for you, your spouse and dependents
Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents on the tax return
Wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc from all employers
Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
A copy of last year's federal and state returns, if available
Proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers for Direct Deposit, such as a blank check
Total paid for daycare provider and the daycare provider's tax identifying number (the provider's Social Security Number or the provider's business Employer Identification Number) if appropriate
To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms.
