It was the sound of a gunshot as a foot chase comes to an end. It all started when a suspect, who his mother identifies as 21-year-old Darren Brown led officers on a high speed car chase from Alabama State University to the corner of Southmont Drive and Kelly Street.
Montgomery police were assisting ASU police since the chase went into the city limits. As the driver made his way through a neighborhood, a Montgomery police officer rammed the back of the red Camaro Brown was driving. Brown then jumped out and ran. Officers searched for him for about thirty minutes before finding him hiding behind this house on Kelly Street.
The sound of the dogs barking tipped police officers off to his hiding spot. The homeowner tells us a bullet struck one of his dogs, killing the dog instantly. Brown was taken in to custody.
The mother of the suspect, who doesn't want to be identified, spoke with WSFA 12 News off camera. The mother was making her way to the scene after hearing her son was involved. Tametria showed her the video of the suspect handcuffed and the mother was distraught after identifying her son in the footage. The mother said she was embarrassed for her son. She said jail is where her son needs to be after this incident.
Obviously, there are still a lot of unanswered questions like "why" police were chasing the man. We've put in calls to the ASU Police Chief and are still waiting to hear back.
