Bessemer police say a body was found inside a car belonging to a missing man.
Sgt. Perryt Hurst says a 911 caller alerted police to a body slumped over in a silver Honda Accord at an Exxon gas station in Hueytown. Hueytown and Bessemer police arrived to the scene at 19th Street North around 2:30 p.m. Monday, April 29.
Bessemer police were investigating the missing persons case of Jason Howard, 31, from April 28. Bessemer Sgt. Perry Hurst says that the car found Monday belongs to Howard, but will not say for sure if the body found inside is the missing man. Police are waiting on the coroner to positively identify the body but hope that they will have a positive identification by Tuesday.
Sgt. Hurst says he cannot say at this time if he thinks foul play is involved in the man's death. He is waiting on the coroner's autopsy to determine cause of death. The man's body has been transported to the Jefferson County Coroner's Office to be examined.
Family members of the missing man tell Fox6 News they believe the body found inside the car is their relative. Janice Broome of Bessemer fears that the body is that of her son, Jason Howard. She reported him missing Sunday.
Broome says Howard had planned to arrive in Bessemer over the weekend to visit his father but never arrived. She says that his car was found near where his father lives.
"I tried calling him. It would go, ring to voicemail. Then it just went straight to voicemail like the phone died," Broome said.
Hurst says that at this point, investigators do not know if this case is a homicide.
