Editorial: Army National Guard

Posted: Updated:

The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, April 23:

Hurricanes, tornadoes and floods, terrorism at home or abroad and military action around the world...we see the Army National Guard everywhere. Called from their homes, jobs and schools to quickly respond to whatever the emergency or disaster may be.

What would we do without them? In the years following 9/11, our military services have been stretched almost beyond belief. The National Guard citizen-soldiers, whose duties, historically, were primarily confined to their home communities and to state-side emergencies, have had to serve during those events while supplementing our active-duty Army resources overseas as well.

Many Guardsmen have done multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, or have been called to assist during natural disasters time and time again, leaving full-time jobs and families behind. I know it's difficult for the businesses that hold those positions open for what might be many months and incredibly difficult for families who thought the National Guard would require only part-time duty...only occasional sacrifice.

But what would we do, where would our country...our security...be without these dedicated, valuable citizen-soldiers?

We salute the Army National Guard and those businesses that support and encourage our Guardsmen. God bless the families who love them and who patiently share them with all of us. What do you think?
