BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
An arrest has been made in the Monday shooting of a Gate City mother who died while holding her newborn baby.
The Birmingham District Attorney's office tells FOX6 News that Corderious Domini McLellan, 20, is charged with capital murder. Jefferson County District Attorney Brandon Falls said McLellan will be held without bond at the Jefferson County Jail. Falls said the suspect turned himself into the Birmingham Police Tuesday night.
McLellan is facing charges for the death of Sherri Williams, 24. Police told FOX6 News that Williams was standing in the doorway of her home in Gate City when she was hit and killed by a stray bullet. She was holding her newborn son in her arms at the time of the shooting. The child was not injured. Williams died at the scene.
Witnesses and police tell FOX6 News a fight started at a neighborhood grocery store. The fight ended in gunfire, according to investigators.
At a press conference Wednesday, Police Chief A.C. Roper said that the crime "shocked the conscious of the community and our most experienced investigators." Roper added that detectives believe that McLellan was the only shooter in this case.
According to court records obtained by FOX6 News, McLellan has been in indicted on charges unrelated to the Gate City shooting death. The charges include possession of a controlled substance and receiving stolen property. Four guns are among the items he is accused of receiving illegally. No trial date has been assigned to McLellan for these charges.
