The Gate City community is remembering 24-year-old Sheri Williams. Williams was shot and killed Monday while standing in her apartment doorway holding her infant son.
Williams has three children and now they will have to grow up without their mother. They will now be raised by their grandmother, Rinda. She says the past week has been difficult. One moment she is mourning the loss of her daughter, the next she is thinking about the future of her now 14-day-old grandson, who will never know the kind of woman Sheri was.
Some people who attended a vigil on Thursday did not know Williams personally, but they say her story has touched them. They are also outraged by what they call senseless violence. They say stray bullets are a dime a dozen in Gate City and the bullet that killed Williams could have hit any of them.
Some residents have started a petition. They are trying to get President Obama to come to Gate City. They say, if he comes, his visit could touch lives, especially those who live a life of crime and violence.
