BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Jefferson County Manager Tony Petelos confirms that an employee caught on video apparently taking money from a taxpayer in exchange for faster service in the tag line has been fired. Another source confirms that criminal charges will be filed in this case.

The video obtained by FOX6 News led to an investigation by the county and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department. Petelos says an internal investigation continues and a second employee has been put on administrative leave with pay.

"This afternoon we terminated the employe that worked in the revenue department. We have an ongoing internal investigation of personnel actions. Because the personnel matters are sensitive we won't be able to make any more comments," Petelos told FOX6 News Wednesday afternoon.

County leaders say this latest incident casts another dark cloud over Jefferson County.

"The reputation of county is already tarnished because of less of occupational tax when you have an isolated incident like this that involves very few employees it further tarnishes that image. But let me explain to you we're working hard to rectify the situation and restore the confidence of the citizens of Jefferson County," Commissioner Jimmie Stephens said.

Department of Revenue Director Travis Hulsey has offered to give the man who recorded the video his $40 back.

Petelos says employee terminated in Jefferson County has the right to appeal that decision.
