Gadsden police are investigating two unrelated rape cases from the same day.
In the first case, police say a 20-year-old woman reported being raped by a man who offered to drive her to work if she paid for the gas.
The victim told police that around 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, a black male approached her as she was walking along Robinson Avenue. They spoke, exchanged numbers and the man offered to give the woman a ride to work later that night. They met back up around 7 p.m. at the Victory gas station in the 900 block of East Broad Street.
The woman told police they drove to Fuel City on East Meighan Blvd. and she purchased gasoline and a beer for the man. Then the man drove them to a field off of Tuskegee Circle and asked if she could escape a choke hold, Captain Bobby Jackson said.
The woman tried to escape but told police the man grabbed and raped her. He drove her back to Fuel City and left, then the victim called police.
Captain Jackson says the investigation is ongoing.
In the second case, a 43-year-old woman reported being raped by a 47-year-old male acquaintance around 10 p.m. on Thursday, May 9.
The woman said she fell asleep on a couch at a friend's apartment in the Princeton Park Apartments. The woman said she "woke up to the acquaintance holding her down and raping her," Captain Jackson said.
When the man left, the woman called police. Officers responded to the scene and found the man outside the apartments. Police say charges in this case are pending.
