The Birmingham Airport Authority received an update on the next phase of the terminal renovation project during Monday's board meeting.
This week, Concourse C, the area including the old Southwest gates, will come down as the foundation for the new section of the terminal is drilled. Construction of the new building's steel structure will begin in the next two to three months.
So far the airport has spent $139.7 million on the expansion project and has around $61 million in expenses left to go.
Also in the meeting, the Airport Authority says the employee healthcare premiums will go up three percent for single and family plans. The rates had not been raised in six years.
Board members will also be asking employees to share more of the cost when the healthcare plan is changed in two years.
