The Talladega County Sheriff has confirmed that the body found near the Talladega Speedway is that of missing race fan Nick Bower. His family confirmed the fact through Twitter as well.
The body was discovered near a campground along Jackson Trace Road. Sheriff Jimmy Kilgore says Bower's body was recovered in the Choccolocco Creek at the Jackson Shoals area, downstream from an old dam. He says searchers spotted Bower while searching the area in a helicopter.
Deputy Coroner Larry Seals said the body was taken to a forensic science lab where the cause of death will be determined. Sheriff Kilgore says no foul play is suspected.
Nick Bower's family set up a Twitter account and website to help in the search for him. This tweet was sent out around 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon from the account:
"Nick's body has been recovered. We thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this unimaginable time."
Authorities and volunteers have been searching the Talladega Superspeedway area for Bower, a race fan who went missing more than a week ago.
In a press release, Sheriff Kilgore said:
"I would like at this time to thank the countless men and women from the many agencies and entities that assisted in the long search effort, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the family members and friends of Mr. Bower."
