A proposed Birmingham budget for next year includes a raise for city employees and money for new emergency communications equipment for police and firefighters.
Mayor William Bell's budget expects to take in and spend about $380 million, 4 percent more than last year.
Along with a one percent pay raise, Bell wants to offset most of the increased cost of healthcare for city employees. The budget also calls for adding city staff for new facilities opening in 2013.
"While our requests far exceed our budget, we are hopeful the economy continues to improve as we prioritize every community's needs. This budget helps us to continue to lay that groundwork," Bell said.
The Birmingham City Council will hold its first public hearing on this proposed budget May 30.
