Birmingham is being ranked among the least active cities in the United States. Men's Health magazine released the rankings of the 100 most and least active cities.
Starting off at number one is Portland, Oregon, then it's Boise, Idaho, Salt Lake City and then the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn. Those leading the way on the back end as the laziest cities starts with Jackson, Miss., Charleston, West Virginia, Nashville, Columbia, South Carolina and then Birmingham.
Over at Railroad Park Jenessia Walker enjoyed a walk at lunchtime Tuesday. Walker and other people are surprised at the ranking.
"I disagree with that. Me personally, I work out time to time. I know a lot of people who work out daily," Walker said.
The magazine used statistics from the Center for Disease Control and a survey company. The magazine looked at the amount of exercise residents did at home, health clubs, the amount of TV viewing, and how a city encourages exercise. Many people in Birmingham said it comes down to personal commitment.
"I went to Regions Field with my granddaughter. I took the bus over here now I'm walking back to my car at Phillips High School, [it's] a nice walk. I didn't have to do that but I needed to work a little off," Nelson Davis said.
The most active cities were places where outdoor sports are often popular. The South was noted for it's laid back attitude and hot and humid weather to discourage outdoor activities. Many people in Birmingham the city can improve on it's ranking.
"We don't want that reputation. Let Mississippi have that," Davis said, laughing.
