Wednesday was a day of remembrance for Montgomery's fallen heroes. The Montgomery Police Department paid tribute to each of the 27 officers who have been lost in the line of duty.
The police department also recognized the service of former and current officers at a ceremony at Police Headquarters on Ripley Street.
Families of those who paid the ultimate price were in attendance and MPD leaders thanked them.
"To the families of our fallen officers, know that you have a shoulder to lean on," Police Chief Kevin Murphy said to those gathered. "Someone who remembers. Someone who cares. Someone who understands that your loved one is our loved one."
A wreath was placed on the permanent memorial in front of the building.
The names of only 24 officers are etched on the memorial. Authorities only recently discovered the other three, but know the names of just two at this time. They're working to place those names on the memorial.
The third officer, killed back in the early 1800s, is not yet identified by name.
