Clay County, AL (WBRC) - The early morning and overnight rain caused major travel problems in Clay County Saturday. Clay County EMA director Theresa Daughty said about 20 campers were rescued early Saturday morning at Lake Chinabee. They were trapped because the waters were rising so quickly.
Daughty says it took a while for rescue crews and volunteer firefighters to get to the campers because the roads were flooded and impassible. They used a boat to complete the rescue.
The message from EMA was if drivers don't have to be on the roads Saturday, then stay home. Numerous roads were closed Saturday morning because of the rain. Good Hope Delta Road also known as County Road 66 was closed. Cragford Road was closed. A pipe was washed out on the south end of Nubbin Creek Road closing that part of the road.
Several roadways were under water and in danger of washing out so crews were checking on those as well. Drivers are asked not to go around the barricades. Stay with Fox6 for the latest on weather conditions.
