BETH K - UAB Nutritionist Beth Kitchin joined us this morning to talk about a vegetarian diet.  Headlines for the latest published on vegetarians claimed that vegetarian diets lower the risk of death. But what did the study really show? Beth says this kind of study could only show correlations - not causation - and that we cannot say that this study showed that eating a vegetarian diet actually causes a lower death rate. When the researchers looked at men vs. women in the study, the women did not, overall, get the same benefits - the results only held up for men.  The study did not show that being a vegetarian was correlated with a lower risk of getting cancer or the risk of heart disease.
The study did not show that vegetarian diets actually lower the risk of death or that the lack of meat in the diet was the reason that vegetarian are linked to a lower risk of death - it could be high levels of other nutrients. The bottom line? If you would like to become a vegetarian, it can be a great, healthy choice that could bring you health benefits. There are also other good reasons to be a vegetarian - it may be better for the environment and many people do it for humanitarian/animal cruelty reasons. Beth recommends that if you decide to go vegetarian, you meet with a dietitian nutritionist to make sure you develop a healthy eating pattern. Not all vegetarians are healthy!  But, if you are a meat lover, you can do many things you can do to stay healthy - eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, get plenty of fiber, and eat less meat.

She also showed us "The Art of Shaving" set which includes pre-shave oil, shaving cream, after-shave balm, and shaving brush ($60-$100). And she showed us ideas for fragrances such as Creed and Tom Ford Fragrances.

GARDENING - Jimmy Rockett showed us how to increase our Hydrangea inventory by rooting the branches. Jimmy says now is the time to take cuttings if you want to root Hydrangeas. He says you should take only the new growth at the top to do this. He has a fee 'how to video' on his web site at http://www.rockettsbugjuicegardens.com/videos.asp. Scroll down to 'hydrangea cuttings' and click video. Here are some tips. Only take the new growth. Make sure to have a rooting fungicide like 'root tone'. have a small cup of potting soil and dampen it first before you stick the cutting in it. Make sure that you have two lower branches, and you strip those off and that will go into the soil. This is where new roots will grow out of the branch. Jimmy says this will make sense if you watch the video. Jimmy says to place your rooted bunch of cuttings in the shade for six weeks and keep them moist but not soggy wet. And lastly, a very important tip, do not pull up the cutting during the six week process to see if you have roots, this will stop the process from working. For more information, call Jimmy at (205) 981-1151, email him at jimmyrockett@att.net, or visit www.rockettsbugjuicegardens.com.
