IRONDALE, AL (WBRC) -

The Irondale City Council has voted against passing an ordinance that would have banned bicyclists from riding on a stretch of Grants Mill Road.

The only thing drivers and cyclists can agree on in this situation is that the stretch of Grants Mill Road between Karl Daly Road and Grantswood Road is not the easiest place to share the road. The narrow, windy stretch has no shoulder so there's little room for cars to pass cyclists.

Irondale City Councilor Terry Bearden proposed the ordinance, saying he almost had a head-on collision there after a driver in the opposite direction crossed over the lane to try and pass a cyclist.

The cycling community stood firm, saying that it's drivers who should be more patient and cautious. The can, by law, ride on public streets.

Cyclists are also relieved this measure didn't pass because they feared this would lead to bans on other roads.
