The City of Montgomery is moving forward with plans to demolish the old Bellingrath Elementary School located on the corner of South Court Street and Edgemont Avenue.
Thursday, crews began the process of abatement on the old facility.
As part of the abatement process, and before demolition can be done, the city must remove asbestos and other materials so they can't make their way into the ground.
Thursday's actions saw machinery being used to tear away light fixtures, windows and other parts of the building.
The Montgomery County School System owns the property. Actual demolition will take place "within the next few months," according to school officials.
The school was originally built in 1950. It was replaced by a modern school in 2010 bearing the same name.
That multi-million dollar school is located a half-mile up the street.
