WINSTON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Investigators have recovered the body of a 37-year-old man who drowned in Smith Lake, Winston County Sheriff Rick Harris confirms.

Sheriff Rick Harris said witnesses told him the man jumped out of a boat into the lake near Duncan Bridge after 4 p.m. Saturday.

"Three friends were swimming and one had jumped off into the water near Duncan Bridge and he started calling for help and they tried to help him, but they couldn't get him above the water. I don't know what really caused this other than a fatigue factor," Harris said.

Harris says the man went into the water but never resurfaced.

Authorities have not yet released the victim's identity.
