Birmingham police have released the identity of a woman whose body was found on Sunday night.
Officials say Katie Mae Lucas, 46, of Birmingham, was last seen at her 136 59th Street North residence around 5:30 p.m. Saturday. A co-worker and a neighbor discovered Lucas unresponsive inside her apartment around 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
East Precinct officers responded to the scene and found Lucas' body inside the apartment. Birmingham Fire and Rescue crews pronounced her dead on the scene. Her death has been ruled a homicide, but police have not yet said how Lucas died.
No one has been arrested or charged in the case. Lucas is one of seven people killed in a six-day span in Birmingham.
The string of homicides prompted Birmingham Police Chief A.C. Roper to issue a statement, saying it is "unconscionable" that the city could experience so many homicides during the past week after going 10 days without a murder.
The police chief says at this time it appears that none of the homicides are related. He says many appear to be acquaintance-based and happened inside private residences.
Anyone with information pertaining to any of these cases is encouraged to contact the B.P.D. Homicide Unit at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
