Student files left at a now-closed east Birmingham middle school have been removed.
FOX6 News first reported this story last Friday when a concerned resident shared video not only of the documents, but just how easy it was to gain access to the old Banks Middle School grounds. When a reporter visited the school last week, she found the gate wide open.
Monday, FOX6 News was back at the school. This time, there was a security guard on watch while the files were removed.
Brad Hobbs is the resident who shared his concerns. He says he actually discovered the issue when a he and a city council candidate went to view the school after it was announced the school could be torn down.
These documents may be gone but Hobbs says he still has concerns.
"Unfortunately, I don't think this is over with because of the question: if this is happening here....what's happening in the other schools that have been shut down? It would be nice for someone with the city to stand up and say we have checked this with a fine tooth comb...the citizens are now safe," he said.
FOX6 News has reached out to Birmingham City Schools to see if they plan to reach out to the families of the students whose records were found at Banks Middle School and also if they plan to go through other closed schools. We have not heard back from them and will update this story as soon as we have.
