Birmingham Mayor, police chief discuss plan to end rash of violence

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Birmingham city leaders are facing questions about how to end the violence after a rash of homicides.

Police Chief A.C. Roper and Birmingham Mayor William Bell met privately Tuesday morning before they conducted a press conference. The police chief and mayor say the city has the man power and resources to keep the city safe. They say these incidents are just hard to predict and prevent because many of them are domestic or at least between acquaintances.

Birmingham Mayor William Bell says most of the crime is happening at night or in the early morning hours. He says the police department has shifted some officers to nights and will continue doing undercover work to target "hot spots" of crime around the city.

During the press conference, the public information director for Birmingham turned off the lights while Chief Roper was talking. She did this so the mayor could get to council, but we did not have a chance to ask all of our questions.
