CLANTON, AL (WBRC) -

An 18-wheeler filled with alcoholic drinks crashed into an overpass and ignited Thursday morning on I-65 in Clanton, causing major delays on the interstate.

State troopers say the wreck happened around 5:30 a.m. on I-65 North at mile marker 205, also known as the Peach Park exit.

For several hours, officials shut down I-65 in both directions and detoured traffic onto the exit ramps and back down the ramps onto the interstate.

By noon, the outside lanes of I-65 north and south had reopened to traffic. The inside lanes will be shut down for the rest of the day, Clanton police said.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was injured in the wreck but is expected to survive, according to State Trooper Sgt. Steve Jarrett. He described the driver's injuries as "serious" and including some severe burns.

The 18-wheeler was the only vehicle involved in the crash, according to Clanton Police, who are investigating.

State trooper Sgt. Jarrett said the tractor trailer was carrying a load of alcoholic beverages. Debris from the broken bottles littered the interstate, spilling into both the southbound and northbound lanes.

The U.S. 31 bridge overpass that the 18-wheeler crashed into suffered "minimal" damage, according to ALDOT official Dee Rowe.

ALDOT sent a team of investigators to inspect the overpass to see if it was safe for travel.

Photos taken by witnesses at the scene showed flames and smoke rising from the wreckage of the 18-wheeler in the interstate median.

State troopers also investigated another fiery 18-wheeler wreck on Thursday morning. A tractor trailer crashed and caught on fire on I-20/59 North near the Boligee exit at mm 32 in Greene County.
