PELHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Some neighborhoods in Shelby County say they don't want to be a part of a potential Pelham school system.

It all boils down to geography. The neighborhoods calling for de-annexation from Pelham are ones that are acutally closer to and currently zoned for Chelsea schools.

If Pelham creates their own school system, those neighborhoods would end up zoned for Pelham. Jason Rhoads, President of the Bent Creek Homeowners Association, declined to go on camera. He did tell FOX6 News that the neighborhood has an active petition asking for de-annexation should the city move forward.

He says he feels that city leaders have their best interests at hear and they will eventually come to a resolution.

Officials say it's a complicated process to de-annex. The city council would first review the petition. If they approve it, the request would head to a probate judge and if no one objects during a 30-day waiting period, the de-annexation would be complete.

FOX6 News will continue to follow this story.
