Birmingham police believe a house fire that killed a man over the weekend was not an accident.
Police are now investigating the victim's death as a homicide and the fire as a case of arson.
The victim has been identified as William Radney, a 69-year-old Birmingham man. Firefighters found his body in the basement of a home at 505 63rd Street South around 11:30 p.m. Saturday, June 29.
Radney was unresponsive and had injuries "that didn't appear to be caused by the fire," Sgt. Johnny Williams said. Birmingham Fire and Rescue workers pronounced Radley dead at the scene.
Birmingham police detectives began investigating his death as a homicide, due to the types of injuries he sustained.
Police said Tuesday morning they have a suspect in custody in the Birmingham City Jail. More details will be released after the warrant procedures are complete.
