The Birmingham Zoo is celebrating two cute new additions. A pair of red pandas was born at the zoo about a month ago.
The red pandas' births are considered significant for several reasons. They were the first of their kind to be born in a U.S. zoo this year. They are on the endangered species list, plus they were a surprise!
The zoo's staff didn't know the mother was pregnant until the morning she went into labor. Usually during pregnancy, red pandas are unstable when they walk, gain weight and eat more, but that was not the case this time.
"Unfortunately, she didn't really increase that much. She had the same appetite, same walking, so we really had no idea. It was a surprise, but a good surprise!" said handler Lindsey Shafer.
The cubs and their mother are being housed in a different location so they can have an opportunity to grow and mature. You can see them for yourself this fall when they go on exhibit.
