The Shelby County Sheriff's Office is warning people tonight about a Facebook scam.
The victims of the scam are jail inmates and their families. Loved ones go to what they think is an official Shelby County Jail Facebook page to send money to an inmate. As it turns out, the money is kept by scammers.
"They are not authorized to receive funds to be placed in an inmate's account," Sgt. Russell Bedsole said. "Furthermore they are not part of the mechanism where they can do it legitimately."
Bedosle says a family members of an inmate contacted the sheriff's office to say she gave money through the site for the purpose of paying for the inmate's food. No money went to that inmate.
Bedsole says the site also posts inmate's mugshots and will take them down for money. The sergeant says this practice may not be illegal but seeking funds to help inmates under false pretenses is.
"What it boils down to is theft of property," Bedsole said. "They have stolen the money you intended to go to a loved ones' account in our facility and they are using it for personal gain."
