BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Big changes are in store for five acres of land along the Cahaba River. A new boat launch and recreational site is planned for the Irondale and Leeds area.

The project is called the Moon River Canoe Launch and Recreation Site. It is named after an old river camp, gas station and dance hall from the 1930's.

The Moon River will be part of the Cahaba Blueway that was recently announced and it will tie in with the Red Rock Ridge and Valley Trail System that are currently under construction in Jefferson County.

It will cost $30,000 and will be paid for by a grant from the Alabama Power Foundation.

The canoe launch and recreation site will be built on property owned by the Freshwater Land Trust and will be maintained by the cities of Leeds and Irondale.

Crews on the project hope to break ground in October and cut the ribbon in the spring of 2014.
