BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A Birmingham soldier is being remembered as a true war hero. Private First Class Elijah Milliard was killed when his unit was attacked in Afghanistan last week.

Gadsden resident Brandon Murray trained with Milliard. He says the soldier was always laughing, always kidding around and it did not take you long to realize that Milliard was a really good guy. According to Murray, Milliard will be remembered as a great serviceman and great person who loved life.

"You know, I'll take away and remember some of the fond memories that we had at training. You know, the first week were at a reception before we got assigned to our training unit. Watching him run around with a pillow case just beating up on people in the barracks. We were always having a good time, just cutting up, that's the kind of person I'm glad to remember him as being," said Murray.

Milliard was killed when his unit was attacked by a rocket propelled grenade on July 4. This was his first deployment. He was 18 years old.
