Alabama education officials say that a high number of high school graduates are unprepared academically for college courses.
Officials say more than one-third of college freshmen from Alabama required remedial coursework during the 2012-2013 school year.
The Deputy Superintendent of Education factored that information into his "Plan 2020" initiative, a plan to improve education statewide over the course of the next seven years. School officials say standards requiring students to enroll in remedial courses vary between the state's public colleges and universities.
