BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal fire. It happened around 9 p.m. on Sunday night. Officials say 59-year-old Mark Wayne Gambrell died in the fire and other people may have injuries.

The fire started in one unit at the Lakes of Inverness apartments, where Gambrell's body was found. Other units had smoke and water damage.

Cahaba Valley, Hoover and Birmingham fire departments helped put the fire out. The cause of the fire is unknown. The Shelby County Sheriff's Department and State Fire Marshal's Office will be investigating. According to the Sheriff's Office, the point of origin is believed to be a kitchen fire.

Some residents have been displaced; we do not know how many people are affected or where they are staying currently.
